Rusty-breasted Cuckoo @ Sungai Congkak, Selangor, Malaysia

Rusty-breasted Cuckoo (Cacomantis sepulcralis) is a very colorful, fast and active bird among hundred species of birds can be found in Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest, Selangor, Malaysia. The bird can be found at the forest edges, along the small stream, in the recreational forest.  

The photos were taken using Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 500 PF lens, ISO 1250, F 6.3, EV 0.0.

Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest is yet another wonderful birding destinations in Selangor, Malaysia as it is a residence to many exotic birds. The recreational forest covers a large area of tropical rain forest, waterfalls, trekking and streams. Whereas accommodations, camp sites, food and recreational activities are provided along the stream, right outside the entrance to the forest. It can be reached in approximately one hour from Kuala Lumpur by car. Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest has a large bird population and varieties. It certainly entices many birders to be there. The main target birds in Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest include different types of kingfisher, babblers, sunbirds, shrikes, malkoha just to name a few.

Other neighboring areas to Sungai Congkak for birding destinations include Sungai Tekali, Sungai Tekala, Sungai Perdik, Sungai Lopo and Pangsun.  

Since Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest is also a popular destinations for family get away especially during weekend, be there early and wait for the desire lighting to come and search for the exotic birds.

Oriental Dollarbird in Flight @ Taman Eko Rimba Kota Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia

Oriental Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) is yet another colorful, very active and attractive resident bird can be found in Taman Eko Rimba Kota Damansara. It can be found on the matured trees around the park.

For Oriental Dollarbird, both male and female are alike. The photos were taken using Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 500 PF lens, ISO 2000, F 7.1, EV -1.3.

Taman Eko Rimba Kota Damansara aka. Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve is one of few community parks located in Selangor city. It is a lowland forest area, covering 800 acres of land to conserve urban-adjacent nature space. It is a public park that serves a green lung for city folks. Located at Section 10 of Kota Damansara, just one hour drive away from Kuala Lumpur City Center. 

The park is an important place for family get way, children activities, jogging and trekking. At the same time, it attracts wildlife and it has become a bird sanctuary. 

Taman Eko Rimba Kota Damansara has a large bird population and varieties with a recorded more than 30 species of birds. It certainly entices many birders to be there. The main target birds include different types of kites, eagles, bee-eaters, kingfishers, shrikes, weavers, flycatchers, bulbuls, pigeons just to name a few. It has become a destination for migratory birds too.

Other neighboring areas to Kota Damansara Community Forest Reserve for birding destination are National Botanical Garden Shah Alam, Shah Alam Lake Garden and Bukit Jelutong Eco Community Park.

Green Broadbill @ Sungai Congkak, Selangor, Malaysia

Green Broadbill (Calyptomena viridis) is a very colorful, fast and active bird among hundred species of birds can be found in Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest, Selangor, Malaysia. The bird can be found at the forest edges, along the small stream, in the recreational forest.  

Male Green Broadbill is featured by black bars on ear-coverts and wing-coverts which are absent on female counterpart. The photos were taken using Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 500 PF lens, ISO 1250, F 6.3, EV -0.3.

Black and Yellow Broadbill [Male] @ Rainforest Discovery Center, Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia

Black and Yellow Broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus) [Male] is colorful, attractive and very active resident bird can be found in Rainforest Discovery Center, Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia. They can be found on the mature tree along the road around the center.

Male Black and Yellow Broadbill is featured by complete  breast-band. The female counterpart is featured by broken breast-band in the center. In terms of size, color and other features, it is observed that there is no significant differences between Black and Yellow Broadbill found in East and West Malaysia. The photos were taken using Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 500 PF lens, ISO 1600, F 6.3, EV -1.0. 

Rainforest Discovery Center or in short RDC is the most famous and accessible natural rainforest in Sabah. It overs a total area of 4,300 hectar of Sepilok-Kabili Forest Reserve. The center is located just 23 km from Sandakan town, Sabah, Malaysia. It can be reached in approximately just half hour drive from Sandakan town. The center offers many attractions to visitors, including jungle trekking, night walk, canopy walk, plants discovery garden and exhibition hall. Rainforest Discovery Center opens from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily. The entrance fee is RM7.00 for Malaysian and RM15.00 for foreigner respectively. For night walk with guide will be charged seperately. Detail information can be obtained at the ticketing counter located at the entance of the center. Other nearby attractions to Rainforest Discovery Center include Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.

Although Sepilok and Sandakan are relatively small towns, to cater for both local and foreign tourists visiting those attractions, there are abundant hotels, resorts, villas and guesthouses of different standards and prices. Not forgetting restaurants, cafe, convenience shops of all kinds and standards.

Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher @ Rainforest Discovery Center, Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia

Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher aka. Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher aka. Three-toed Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca) is colorful, attractive and very active resident bird can be found in Rainforest Discovery Center, Sepilok, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. They can be found on the mature tree along the road around the center.

Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher is a tiny kingfisher with red bill. In terms of size, color and other features, it is observed that there is no significant differences between Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher found in East and West Malaysia. The photos were taken using Nikon D500 paired with Nikkor 500 PF lens, ISO 2500, F 6.3, EV -1.0.
